There are two things you should know about me: I’m impatient and I hate soggy, limp French fries. The invention of French fries is nothing short of a miracle. It’s amazing to think how a simple concept—slicing potatoes and frying them in oil—results in such a delicious food. It’s because I appreciate French fries so much that I can’t stand it when they’re reduced to sad, mushy strips of potato. But though fresh French fries are best, I still appreciate the convenience of buying frozen fries from the grocery store.
The problem is, considering they’re a convenience food, they take a long time to make. If made in the oven, frozen french fries can take close to half an hour to cook. By the time they’ve defrosted enough to be edible, it’s probably already been 20 minutes so it’s hard to wait even longer for them to crisp up.
Thanks to my impatience and LOC (love of crispness), I use a hack to make the fastest, crispiest, frozen fries: I microwave the frozen French fries before putting them in the oven. This cuts the baking time down from 30 minutes to 10.

How to Make the Best Frozen French Fries
Here’s how to use the microwave to make quick, crispy frozen fries. I use ALDI’s steak fries, but the options are endless (Crinkle cut! Shoestring! Waffle!).
- Preheat your oven to the temperature listed on the back of the bag.
- Place your desired amount of frozen French fries on a plate and microwave for 1 1/2 minutes—this will help them partially defrost.
- Transfer the fries onto a prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Pop the fries into the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes, or until they reach a golden brown color.
More Tips for the Best Frozen French Fries
- Seasoning: Sprinkle salt, garlic powder, or your seasoning of choice onto the fries right after they come out of the oven.
- Dips: Serve with your favorite sauce like ketchup, honey mustard, or a homemade fry sauce.
- Serving: Enjoy the fries on their own, as an appetizer, or as a side with burgers, hot dogs, fish, or other entrée of choice.
- Storing: In general, leftover fries don’t keep well, so only make enough for one meal at a time.
