My family and I recently went to Mexico, so I bought some travel jars at Dollar Tree to transport our toiletries. When we returned home, I had a few unused extras, and it occurred to me that the twist-top lids would make them great as kitchen and lunchbox companions.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
While they’re not food-grade for long-term storage, they’re perfect for dry ingredients like half-empty packets of taco seasoning, instant coffee, or spices (which are all great for traveling, too!). At $1.25 for a three-pack, they’re an affordable solution for keeping small essentials neat and portable.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n These jars may be marketed for beauty products, but don’t let that deter you. First, the twist-top lids are genuinely secure, which I learned by transporting liquids. The reusable, lightweight jars are clear, so I can easily see what’s inside them, and they hold up to 1.86 fluid ounces, which makes them just the right size for particular dry ingredients and portable lunch toppings. <\/strong>I opted for the containers with grey lids, but they also come in a multi-color pack for those who want to identify different contents at a glance.\n<\/p>\n <\/p>\n My initial “aha!” moment came when I transferred an annoying half-used packet of taco seasoning into one of these jars. It kept everything contained and fresh for the next use. I’ve also since used them for small-batch homemade seasoning blends, like an everything bagel mix that I know we’ll use up within a few days to a week.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n So far, the best use I’ve found for them has to be for packed lunches. The secure twist-tops mean we can transport a range of ingredients worry-free. For example, I’ve been using them for dry cereal and granola for my daughter’s yogurt parfaits. This way, she can sprinkle it on when she eats, which keeps the toppings fresh and crunchy.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n They’re also perfect for sending a single serving of Parmesan cheese to sprinkle over pasta, toasted pepitas, roasted nuts for my husband\u2019s lunches, a bit of dried fruit, or a tiny portion of chocolate chips or other candy as a sweet surprise. My daughter also occasionally takes ketchup or mustard for dipping or topping some of her lunch items, and these containers make it easy. They’re filled in the morning and cleaned out (easily, I might add) by 5 p.m.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n Both of my kids love toting little portions of snacks or trail mix to things like swimming lessons and soccer, and I love that I’m not buying as many single-serve packages. Since they’re technically not food grade, I’m careful not to use them for oily or acidic foods, anything hot, or long-term wet or perishable ingredients, like moist dairy or salad dressings. Beyond that, anything is fair game.
