The restaurant&#8217;s corned beef and beer-braised cabbage is a popular staple, even when it\u2019s not St. Patrick\u2019s Day.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> I just imagine someone in the kitchen surrounded by all those cabbage heads with the whole cleaning and cooking process down to a science. But what about home cooks who need to wash just one cabbage at a time?\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cCabbage grows low to the ground, which means it can easily pick up dirt and attract insects between its tightly packed leaves as it grows,\u201d says registered dietitian and author Melanie Marcus.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> She starts by rinsing the cabbage thoroughly under running water and then peeling away and discarding the two outer layers of leaves.\u00a0\u201cNext, I cut the cabbage into quarters, which helps expose the inner layers and allows me to check for any dirt or insects,\u201d Marcus says. \u201cThen I\u2019ll quickly submerge the quarters in water, giving any debris a chance to lift away.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-should-you-wash-cabbage-with-special-products\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block lifestyle-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\"> Should You Wash Cabbage with Special Products? <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> There\u2019s no need to use anything but water to wash produce, says the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Soaps and detergents have not been approved to be used on food products. Instead, wait until you\u2019re ready to prepare it.\u00a0 \u201cAs with most produce, it\u2019s best to wait until you\u2019re ready to use it,\u201d Marcus says. \u201cWashing ahead of time can add moisture, making it susceptible to spoilage.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> If you want to prepare your cabbage early, be sure to dry it well with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel before storing it.\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-storing-cabbage\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block lifestyle-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\"> Storing Cabbage <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Cabbage should be stored whole and unwashed wrapped in plastic wrap or in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer. Stored correctly, it should last a week or two in the refrigerator.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cCabbage is known for its firm texture. You\u2019ll know it\u2019s low in quality when leaves begin to soften,\u201d Marcus says. \u201cYou may also notice a foul odor, discoloration, or slimy texture begin to form.\u201d\u00a0If you have more cabbage than you know you can eat, there are ways to prepare it so you don\u2019t have to toss it into the compost pile.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cGrowing up, when we were long on cabbage, my grandmother made sauerkraut.
